Ed Sheeran overcow a depression, suicidal thoughts, alcohol and drug addiction

Ed Sheeran is a successful British musician, but despite this, it would never cross your mind that the musician had problems with drugs, addictions and suicidal thoughts. The documentary "The Sum of it All" reveals the ups and downs of the artist's career.

Disney+ broadcasts four episodes of this unique documentary series, which will make us think about our well-being and our mental health. "When they told me about the possibility of making the documentary, I said yes. 'It should be about me in the studio, at concerts...' That's not what the documentary is about," confesses the artist.

The health problems of his wife Cherry Seaborn, with whom the artist has two daughters, led Ed Sheeran to a deep depression. “But in early 2022, a series of events impacted my life, my mental health and, inevitably, the way I see music and art,” he said.

The music serves for the artist to escape from his fears, his traumas and what he fears, as Ed Sheeran reveals: "It helps me understand my feelings (...) I wrote everything that came to my mind and, within a week, I exchanged a decade of themes and work for my darkest thoughts."

The death of his best friend in 2022 led the artist to think about suicide: "My best friend died. And that shouldn't have happened. I've always had bad times in my life, but it was only in the last year that I revisited them," he explained in an interview with Rolling Stone. "I felt I didn't want to live, but it wasn't the first time in my life that I felt it. You feel like you're drowning under the waves. You're in a place you can't get out of," reveals the British musician.

"Where I come from, no one talks about feelings. In England, everyone considers it strange to go to a psychologist. But I think it's a huge help to be able to talk to someone, vent and not feel guilty when we do. This help is not by pressing a button and you are automatically fine. It is something that will always be there, that needs to be treated and that has to be managed."

“I’ve always drunk, but I’ve never touched drugs until I was 24,” he confessed, despite not wanting to reveal which substances he ingested. “I remember being at a festival and thinking that if all my friends were taking it, it couldn't be that bad. Suddenly, it became a weekly habit, then daily, then taken twice a day. Then I did it without drinking. Everything has become very black."

“Drinking a few beers is one thing. Drinking a bottle of vodka is a completely different one. I thought: 'You're entering the thirty. Grow Up. You've enjoyed it, you've had all the experiences. Now forget about it.”

"I never touch drugs again, because that's how Jamal died. To do so would be to disrespect your memory," reveals Ed Sheeran when he talks about his best friend's death in February 2022.

"I'm very insecure. And then when you enter an industry where you are constantly being compared to the other pop stars... I came up on that One Direction wave and said to me: 'Why the hell don't I have a six pack?'."

"I didn't have it because I loved kebabs and beer. But he kept asking me why the hell he was so fat. I ended up doing what he did, eating heartlessly and throwing everything away."

"If you are eating food you really want to eat, but then you also exercise and conquer the look and shape you want to have.... I think that's a good balance. That's why, I love fast food, I love caris, a good wine. I love all the things that are bad when you don't exercise. I think I would go crazy if I spent my life without eating carbohydrates," reveals Ed Sheeran, who is now addicted to practising physical exercise.

"It's all very cute at first, it's all fun and rock n roll, but then everything becomes sad," he ends up revealing about the fictional world of fame.
